Making a Positive Change – Staverton Is Carbon Neutral for Energy

We must all do as much as possible to reduce our impact on the natural world and it’s why at Staverton we’ve been working hard to build greater sustainability into our operations.

Reducing the carbon footprint of our business is one way to make a positive change and it’s something we’re proud to say we’ve achieved over the last six months.

Carbon Offsetting Projects

Our energy footprint of 106 tonnes of carbon per year relates to our two sites: Rotherham (our office furniture manufacturing facility) and London (our showroom) and we’ve offset last year’s emissions via two fantastic projects.

The first is with a renewable energy project in India – called Kothapeta. We’ve offset our emissions by funding an equivalent reduction of carbon emissions at this grid-connected natural gas-based Combined Cycle Power Plant. The project has the capacity to meet the base-load requirements of India’s southern grid. It uses cleaner fuels to generate electricity rather than high-carbon emitting fossil fuels such as coal.

Kothapeta – the renewable energy project in India where we are offsetting our carbon emissions.

The second is supporting Tom’s Wood in Yorkshire, the county where our office furniture manufacturing facility is based. This project, which has been established to understand the guidance of the Woodland Carbon Code and the Peatland Code, spans more than 18 hectares, and is focused on creating new native woodland to promote local biodiversity and wildlife connectivity. Already the wood includes 52,700 trees and will sequester more than 14,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide during its growing lifetime. Staverton is pleased to have added 100 more trees to the woodland, which will offset 36 tonnes of our carbon emissions.

Certified-Carbon-Neutral-Sustainable-Company

We’ve planted 100 trees in Tom’s Wood in Yorkshire, a new native woodland project, to offset 36 tonnes of our carbon emissions.

How We Got There

This project has been delivered with the help of consultants from Environmental Strategies Ltd – who measured the extent of Scope 1 (direct greenhouse emissions that occur from sources controlled or owned by an organisation) and Scope 2 (emissions caused indirectly when the energy it purchases and uses is produced) carbon emissions, before identifying reduction strategies and putting off-setting plans in place.

Continual Progress

This focus on carbon reduction isn’t our only environmentally-minded endeavour – we’re also working hard to reduce waste and the emissions we produce in the first place. Plus we have already made a variety of operational and design changes to ensure that sustainability is part of who we are. From sharing components between designs to cut down on manufacturing, right through to building longevity and flexibility into our office furniture, removing packaging from our products and filling our delivery vans more carefully to reduce mileage and carbon – we are making positive changes. Over the last year we’ve also recycled 98.5% of our waste and we’re on track to hit 99% this year. Sustainability is part of who we are, and we ask it of our supply chain too.

As a UK office furniture designer and manufacturer we know that true sustainability isn’t a one-off task. It has to underpin the very essence of how we approach the design, manufacture, install and afterlife of office furniture as well as our individual behaviours, each and every day. We are committed to the task …after all, we have to be the environmental change we want to see.

Flexible Office Furniture: 4 Things FMs Need to Know

The pandemic, and our subsequent return to the office have made the need for high-performing workspaces more important than ever. For Facility Managers (FMs) charged with translating employees’ new wants and behaviours into engaging and agile environments – it’s a challenge that can be solved, in part, with a greater focus on flexibility.

Hybrid working is the new normal and so office spaces are becoming transient hubs for collaboration and community, rather than merely places for head-down, desk-based work. Collaboration and teamwork are important to 75%[1] of employees and 17%[2] are more satisfied when collaboration is part of their work – so employers, FMs and therefore workplaces must meet these needs if they are to support productivity, wellbeing and retention.

Flexible-Office-Furniture-Solutions

Flutter’s global HQ in Dublin embraces collaboration with this teamwork space, complete with Scrumwall.

However adapting to new employee needs isn’t an event, but rather a mindset. FMs need to ensure that workplaces continually offer flexibility – both in terms of how space is used on a daily basis, and also how it can evolve and adapt to meet the longer-term strategic needs of an organisation.

Flexible-Office-Furniture-Solutions

DP World in Southampton has embraced flexible office furniture with the use of flip-top tables so that spaces can be reconfigured, and furniture moved with ease.

Office furniture gives space form, function and flexibility. It presents a whole world of possibilities. It can make even the smallest workplace accommodate multiple different needs and styles. It can promote choice, aid well-being and support employees with an increasingly task-orientated approach to work. It can make one office floorplate able to accommodate shifting requirements over numerous years.

Consequently there are four flexible office furniture considerations FMs need to know in order to shape and enhance the post-pandemic workplace:

1. Sit Stand: Designed in response to sedentary office behaviours, sit-stand desks help employees to move more and promote greater choice. While the widespread adoption of these desks is still in the early stages (most employers apportion 10-20% of their desking to sit stand), some organisations have been quick to champion sit stand flexibility. Interactive entertainment company King is one such example. We designed a mobile sit-stand desk solution so their team could manage their personal comfort and reconfigure furniture easily as their needs changed. These desks changed their collaborative dynamic and made it possible for mini-teams to coalesce easily – whether that’s moving desks into mini huddles or simply rotating them 90 degrees to face their colleagues.

Flexible-Office-Furniture-Solutions

Games developer King has made good use of Staverton’s mobile sit-stand desks so their team could manage their personal comfort and reconfigure furniture easily as needs change.

2. Space-defining Structures: Flexible office furniture can help to zone open-plan spaces. Our recent development of TT, a modular grid-based shelving system and Scrumwall are perfect examples. Both are space-defining structures with a high degree of functionality and user engagement, thanks to a wide variety of add-ons such as standing tables, lockers, write-on surfaces, and integrated AV. Furniture of this ilk enables numerous different work settings to radiate from one central spine and provides a cost-effective way to adapt spaces and create distinct zones within large open floor plates. Other furniture in this category includes high-backed seating booths, storage systems and self-contained meeting pods – all of which create spaces within spaces and boast multiple uses.

Flexible-Office-Furniture-Solutions

Sky Bet Leeds used Scrumwall with standing height tables and integrated AV add-ons to help define different spaces and provide extra areas for impromptu gatherings and meetings.

3. Alternative Meeting Spaces: Not all meetings are face-to-face. Not all meetings need to be held in private meeting rooms. In fact, impromptu collaboration and quick team meetings can be best supported with more informal and flexible spaces that also serve other uses. This might be achieved with den-style office furniture – typically semi-enclosed soft seating which offers acoustic privacy and comfort in equal measure – or through touch-down spaces. More collaborative team gatherings may require a meeting room, but kitchen table project setting or informal company presentation areas provide other useful options, while conference calls or video meetings are best suited to individual phone and AV booths, where acoustics and privacy have been fully considered. Spaces with multiple uses have greater value.

Flexible-Office-Furniture-Solutions

Staverton TT gives Flutter’s collaborative kitchen a sense of separation from the main floorplate, while our kitchen tables provide ample spaces for team lunches and informal meetings.

4. Easy to Move: Whether it’s being able to quickly pull up extra seating to a collaboration table or distinguishing an area to accommodate a new team – the modern office needs furniture that is quick and easy to move when required. This doesn’t have to mean everything on castors either, as designers and manufacturers have engineering solutions that are light and simple to move and set up.

Flexible-Office-Furniture-Solutions

Flip-top tables help to make this meeting room truly flexible for DP World in Southampton.

Flexibility is at the very core of the hybrid working concept. For FMs striving to create agile workplaces that work for today and tomorrow, flexible office furniture offers a valuable win-win.

Have Wheels Will Travel: Staverton’s Mobile Office Furniture

Mobile office furniture is a staple of the modern office environment.

With agile working now a widespread practice in businesses of all sizes and sectors, employers need to offer flexibility and choice in order to support how employees work, and to ensure the longevity and relevance of the workplace itself.

Here, we share three of our most mobile pieces of office furniture and explain why they’re so well suited to your open-plan, agile workspace:

1. TT

TT is a highly flexible and versatile modular grid-based shelving and storage system, ideal for defining and zoning spaces within the office. In addition to the partitioning of space, TT can also be used as a backdrop for employee collaboration, as the grid structure is capable of housing full media and AV connectivity, sitting or poseur height tables as well as whiteboards and many other elements that support the agile environment. One of its unique features is that TT is now available on castors making it easier for organisations to adapt their office space as needs and working styles dictate.

Staverton’s Marketing Manager Carlo Delucchi said: “TT offers mobility in two ways. Firstly there is the possibility of moving its physical location thanks to the castors. Secondly, because the furniture helps to define space and create different activity-based settings, it encourages the movement of people throughout the office. Satisfying these two needs in one piece of furniture is highly effective and practical.”

2. SMS

SMS is our mobile sit-stand desk solution. SMS features individually lockable and load-bearing castors that enable the user to move and adjust their workstation with ease whilst also providing the wellbeing benefits of a sit-stand desk. A simple locking mechanism ensures that once the desk is in situ it is both secure and wobble-free. The SMS range also features our plenum unit that enables a simple and safe ‘plug and play’ solution for the user. This removes the need for the facilities team to decommission a desk every time it requires movement.

Carlo said: “The modern workplace is centred around employee choice and empowerment. Providing furniture they can personalise and move is an important part of enabling agility. One day SMS could be moved to make a bank of desks larger for teamwork, and the next it could be in a quieter part of the office. SMS offers the ultimate in individual employee choice.”

3. Flip Top Tables

Once reserved for training rooms only, flip top tables are a highly flexible piece of office furniture that is well suited to the agile workplace. Available in a variety of sizes and with the option to integrate power and data services – these tables feature castor wheels and are easy to nest. The result is a piece of furniture that can be brought out, moved or put away with ease, whether that’s in a meeting, conference, training or open-plan space.

Carlo added: “The workforce has never been so transient. With hybrid working here to stay, the office experience has to be rich in choice and variety. Mobile, flexible furniture offers just that and gives employees and facilities professionals the scope to shape the workplace to suit their personal needs.”

Staverton is well known for being a UK office furniture designer and manufacturer, a sit-stand desk manufacturer and a workstation supplier – but most of all we are problem-solvers with an innate knowledge of how changing workplace behaviours require more from agile office furniture solutions.

Staverton Ranks Highly on Google

In 2020, we set some challenging objectives. These included reducing our website’s bounce rate, achieving a higher ranking in search engines’ organic results, and improving our website’s content to enhance your experience with us.

Our website redesign, SEO, and overall marketing strategy included:

  • two product configurators
  • an interactive showroom tour
  • a filter to reduce eye discomfort
  • fresh case studies and client testimonials
  • new titles, copy, animations, videos, imagery, and brand colours
  • Heightened Thinking: the internet’s first blog dedicated to sit-stand solutions
  • the Sustainability page, the Content Lab page, and new menu

And there are some fantastic things still about to emerge. The great news is that we’ve already seen some significant results, and we’re delighted that our website ranks on Google’s highly desired first page.

You can now find us on Google and other web browsers by searching ‘desk manufacturers’, ‘mobile office furniture’, ‘workstation supplier’, ‘bench workstations’ and ‘designer office desk manufacturers’.

Our site also comes up when searching for more general terms, such as ‘office furniture manufacturer’. There are more search variants under which you can find out, but the word ‘manufacturer’ seems to be key.

How have we achieved this?

“With a bit of technical magic”, explained our Marketing Manager, Carlo Delucchi. “But it’s mostly thanks to being a renowned brand with super products delivered to the likes of BT, BBC, Burberry, Sky, TalkTalk, and Flutter”.

Active Work and Lifestyles Could Boost Global Economy

The results of a new academic study on the relationship between global economic growth and physical activity, carried out by Vitality and RAND Europe, reveal significant benefits to the economy and life expectancy if people adopted a more active lifestyle. The study suggests that the world’s GDP would gain more than $100bn (£80bn) each year until 2050 if people adopted a more active daily routine that could involve simple choices such as walking 15 minutes more a day, jogging slowly for half a mile a day, or walking 1,500 extra steps a day.

The study sets out to enhance the understanding of how inactivity affects all parts of the economy, beyond simply the traditional considerations of healthcare and mortality. It analysed several scenarios to formulate a global picture of how increased physical activity can benefit not only individuals, but also businesses and global economies. The economic improvement arises from lower mortality rates (more people alive and contributing to the economy), reduced absenteeism, and lower presenteeism driven largely by the impact of physical activity on mental health.

The productivity data stems from data collected as part of Vitality UK’s Britain’s Healthiest Workplace (BHW) Survey, as well as AIA’s Asian Healthiest Workplace Survey. In both, employers are asked about their provision of health and well-being interventions, while employees are asked over 100 questions related to demographic factors (age, gender, education, income), lifestyle and health behaviour (nutrition, smoking habits, physical activity, sleep behaviour), health factors (mental and physical health indicators, chronic and musculoskeletal conditions), as well as workplace productivity and job and life satisfaction. Overall, the sample pool was significant, yielding a collective sample size of 120,143 across seven countries.

As part of Clerkenwell Open, we will host a limited-capacity talk from architect and interior designer Giuseppe Boscherini, whose services we were lucky enough to acquire to design our showroom in 2019.

Giuseppe will be talking about adaptation, mitigation and resilience, and how, as designers, we must be courageous in reframing the professional, intellectual and operational models we’ve been used to and dependant on.

To ensure everyone’s safety and comfort, we’d appreciate it if you could wear a face-covering during the talk. We have 20 tickets for grabs, and you can RSVP here <<<

N.B. Be sure to leave some room for a light lunch after Guiseppe has shared his wisdom.

Clerkenwell Open will be packed with other engaging content — including seminars and workshops programme by Women in Office Design — prompting the return of architects, designers, buyers and specifiers to the area.
